Today is surgery day for Thunder.  A few weeks ago I mentioned that Thunder was having an issue with blood in his urine and was diagnosed with a benign enlarged prostate.  This can be an issue for senior intact male dogs.  Treatment is either an expensive medication, or to have the dog neutered. After consulting with our vet, we decided to have Thunder neutered.  It should take care of the problem.

About the same time that Thunder was diagnosed with the prostate issue, we discovered an issue with one of his canines.  Somehow it had shoved up into his gum and is now impacted.  We have no idea how it happened.  Perhaps it was from pouncing on hard bumpers in cold weather as Thunder is want to do, but we really do not know for sure.

The vet examined the tooth and feels it will need to come out because she feels it may compromise his nasal passage and cause problems going forward.  The problem is that extractions can end up taking time and require the dog to be under anesthesia for a long period of time.  Our vet would prefer not to combine extractions with a neuter surgery in a 10-year-old dog.

After consulting with our vet, we came up with a plan:

Today Thunder will have the neuter surgery, a dental cleaning and digital x-rays of his teeth so we can know for sure if that canine needs to come out and if there are any other teeth that should be removed.  We started Thunder on an antibiotic a couple of days ago in preparation.  Then once Thunder has recovered from the neuter surgery, he will return for the extractions.

Of course Thunder is not happy about missing two breakfasts, one today and he will miss another when he goes back for the extractions!

  3. I hope the surgery goes well for Thunder today. Sending lots of good thoughts your way and maybe he won’t have to have the extraction if the x-rays show it might not be an issue to leave that tooth where it is.

Hang in there Thunder and Mom!

  8. Hope al is well with this wonderful senior! Thunder, I do not like the mouth doctor either! Or having to miss breakfast. What is a Chessie to do? Wishing this is as pain free as can be. Take care, all.

  9. Surgery is always worrisome, even if it’s routine so we are sending good thoughts that all goes perfectly well! Bummer on missing breakfasts! No fun!!

  10. Hopefully by now Thunder is out of surgery, possibly out of recovery, and back home resting and recuperating from his surgery this morning. I pray all went well for him and that he won’t need that tooth extraction after all. Give him an extra treat, kiss, and hug for me when he’s up to it.

  11. Its hard to consider putting a senior dog under anesthesia, putting Mica under a 8 for spaying really frightened me. But the vets did a great job and she healed very fast. We will keep Thunder in our thoughts, i’m sure he does not want this surgery. Good luck Thunder!

  12. Our crew is actually pretty good about missing breakfast. They’ll pout for a while but then they’ll just give up and go back to bed. 🙂
