It is Friday again!  The 2 brown dawgs are going to get out and do some training this weekend.  We need to get it in while we can because between the holidays and the new pup, it will be tough to get there over the next couple of months.  I am hoping for some new training pictures.  🙂

Storm should be in the last week of her season.  Both dogs have been on best behavior these past two weeks.  Storm has been very laid back.  Thunder has been the best boy.  No howling from him this time around and he never quit eating.  I guess as he matures, it is not as tough on him as it was when he was younger.

He is still stuck downstairs at night (which kind of bugs him), but we haven’t crated him since the first night.  This has been a leap of faith since the Christmas tree is up and this is the first time he has spent any length of time uncrated and by himself.

Thunder (He has a crop of toys left over from our Golden Retriever.)

It is hard to believe that our former counter surfer has been such a good dog.  Now that he is older, I guess he may not need the crate as much.

Thunder and Storm

We plan to do some rearranging at our house as soon as Storm is done with her season.  Until Storm came into season, we had two crates in the family room which were taking up a lot of space.  We plan to move Thunder’s crate to the room where Storm has been staying the last couple of weeks and leave the older dogs in there when they need to be crated.

Snoozing

We will get a new crate for the pup and put that in the family room.  Our routine for puppies is that they spend nights in their crate while potty training and pretty much for the first year until we can trust them in the bedroom with us.  With two big dogs, we have to be concerned about the weight difference between the pup and big dogs until the pup gets bigger.  At night and when we are not watching them, it is just safer to keep them separate.

Side Dogs

Puppies need a lot of sleep so the crate will also offer a place for the pup to snooze or just hang out away from the big dogs.

Storm Outside

We enjoy the sleeping pictures because if the new pup is anything like his grandfather, he will be going 100 mpr a lot of the time.  🙂

Tomorrow, more puppy pictures thanks to Cindy.  They have really grown.  🙂

  1. When used properly, crates are just awesome, aren’t they? I doubt we would have gotten through Shiva’s first year with out one. Okay, I know, we wouldn’t have. Recently we have started leaving her out at night as well and she has surprised me by doing very well. She still has the option if she wants it, but I think she is enjoying the luxury of sleeping on the couch instead.

  2. We see you have plans all in order and are ready to move forward on getting everything ready for when you bring the new pup home. We sure enjoyed all these pictures. We hope training goes well and everyone has fun. Hugs and nose kisses

  3. You must be beyond excited to have the new puppy (I know I would be.) I can’t wait to experience all the joys of puppy with you, without any expenditure of energy on mine. 🙂 Unless you count reading of course…..

  4. Love the first photo. That’s a relaxed dog. I have never been in a crate, well not since my MOM brought me home when I was 6th months old. I did spend some time in one prior to that. But it was to small my nose was against one end and my tail stuck out the other. Sure glad she came along to give me a forever home. Can’t wait for for puppy photos.
    Happy training.
    Blessings,
    Goose

  5. It’s soooo exciting that you’re getting a new pup!! Woohoo!!

I’m also happy to hear that Thunder has been so good he may be trusted some more outside of his crate! Yay! I soon got the hang of this – I didn’t like my crate – after a while Mum and Dad tested me one night in their bedroom to not be in the crate, as they knew I didn’t like it, and I made sure I was perfectly behaved, then they extended it to the house when they were out – despite my Mischief Mindset, when I’m on trust I’m the perfect Doggie and don’t touch anything!! This has resulted in the crate living in the garage and I’m sure not inside it!!

I can’t wait to see the new pup join your family, when does it arrive?

    Have a fun day,

    Your pal Snoopy 🙂

    1. Snoopy you are a good doggie! The 2 brown dawgs and the new pup need to like their crates because they spend a lot of time in them when we travel and train. But they don’t mind so much because they get to retrieve ducks and bumpers. 🙂

  6. I’m so impressed at how organized you are in your planning! We picked Daisy out and then ran around like a bunch of nuts getting the things we needed before bringing her home the next weekend. ::blush:: It’s amazing how fast puppies grow!

    1. This will be our 4th dog. When we got our first dog, the Golden, we had nothing with us. We went to the breeders to just look. We had talked to her several times on the phone but since it was our first dog, we just wanted to really check it out. It was a bit of a ride (a couple of hours). When we spent time with him, we fell in love with him. He was 14 months old and really seemed to like us. We all decided not to wait and brought him home with us that day. His breeder had to give us a rope because we didn’t even bring a leash…lol. We stopped at the pet store on the way home.

  7. Enjoy your quiet time now because it sounds like over the holidays things will be getting pretty hectic. Sounds like you have a good plan all ready for when the pup comes, though. Good luck! Love the picture of Thunder in his crate!

  8. Oh noes… I think my mommy wants another puppy. It’s not gonna happen. Heh.

    Woofs & hugs, <3

    ~Bailey (Yep, I'm a girl!)

  9. Sounds like you have everything organized and ready for the new puppy!
I love these photos today of Thunder and Storm in their crates, and I think the crate is a good idea for the new pup too, a place for him to go if he wants to get out of the way of the big dogs!

    1. Our rule for pups is that they are crated unless we can watch them. But we haven’t actually purchased the crate for the pup yet…lol. Must get on that!

  10. yep. those puppies are a lot of work and they tend to go crazy fast when they are not sleeping!

    Your plan sounds great!

  11. Hi Y’all,

Let me tell you…I LOVE my crate up here in the mountains ’cause it’s in the middle of everything. However, at the shore house it is in a little mud room. I lay around in my crate here in the mountains. When I’m at the shore I only go into my crate to eat. I like my crate in the middle of all the activity.

Hope Thunder and Storm don’t get twisted noses when you rearrange the crates.

    Y’all come back now,
    Hawk aka BrownDog

    1. I hope they don’t get their noses out of joint either…lol. But they are pretty adaptable and Storm has been in that room for a couple of weeks and it has been OK. Both dogs don’t spend that much time in the house in crates because they have their outside runs. In the house Thunder’s favorite spot is in the tiny hallway between the house and the garage. He curls up with his back against the door. If the new crate location doesn’t work out, we can always move back. 🙂

At the cabin they aren’t crated at all. Only the pup will be crated up there. 🙂

    1. I don’t know if we will show him. If Cindy wants to, she may do it. We really want to concentrate on hunt test training at first. But who knows? 🙂

  12. That smaller black crate is about the size of Gretel’s 🙂 An “appropriate” size crate didn’t work for her. She would freak out and throw herself around. We, too, keep our “puppy” in a crate until we trust her. Chester is a good boy and gets to roam the house when we are not home but little Gretel gets crated. She really likes it more than Chester ever did. Glad that things went easier with Thunder this time around. I am sure it will never not bother him but hopefully it gets easier and easier (for your sake AND his)
