Hubby went out to again try his luck with the wood ducks.  He got one which again landed on the other side of the river.  He came back and got Freighter who took a nice line to where hubby thought the duck was sitting (in the cover this time).  Freighter did not come up with the bird.  He hunted the area a bit but kept swimming toward a dead tree.  Freighter was directed back to the area where the bird fell but he still did not find it.  Hubby decided to wade across the river to help him look for it.  Lucky for hubby, he is tall and his waders were just high enough.  The bird was not in the area where it fell.  There were only feathers.  As they were looking around, I saw a duck fly up from the base of the dead tree.  Yep, it looks like Mr. Wood Duck escaped to fly south.  Freighter must have winded him which is why he kept heading toward the tree.  Sometimes you should trust your dog, even if he is just a pup.

  1. Yep you should always listen to us. We know. Back when my MOM use to hunt her dog Pete would do this sort of thing all the time. Way to go Freighter!!

  2. It seems to me you’ve got a great hunting dog, he seems to have good instincts, loves what he is doing and for such a young guy does a good job. With a bit more training I think you will be very pleased with him.

    Team Freighter!!

  3. I agree with you, dog sometimes know better.
Picture it (ill make it short), I was hiking with Doggy, he was only 5 months back then, I was on a trail with no signals, I had my GPS so I could retrace my steps, 1 hour into our hike I decided to turn back, after 20 minutes we got to a junction, 3 possibles ways and I had no idea which one, looked at the GPS, no signal, Doggy kept pulling for the far left I took the far right, once I got reception again I realized I’ve taken the wrong turn. Went back just to found out Doggy was right.

    1. I am not at all surprised. The Golden we had before the Chessies was very good with this. We would go out hiking and be unsure of which trail to take back. We let him pick and he was right every time. He was also really good leading us back even if there was no trail. The nose knows.

  4. Wow, what a great hunting family. Mom says it is a shame she does not hunt small game because I am an excellent hunter. I could have been a bed bug sniffer outer or US Customs dog but mom just wanted a dog to be a dog so no work for me but you guys are super cool!

  5. What a smart puppy 🙂 I really love the way your pictures pop up with a caption as you scroll over – like a photographic comic-book page of the action!

  6. Hi Y’all!

BOL! I could have told you our nose is better than your eyes anyday!

    Y’all come by now,
    Hawk aka BrownDog

  7. Great job, Freighter. Learning to trust a pup takes time and we’ve all second-guessed our dogs. I know I have.
