Freighter had a blast his first weekend at Fish Point.  Unfortunately the weather was not ideal for hunting.  It was warm and windy with a lot of driving rain.

In addition, many of the hunting areas are dry.  The DNR normally floods the hunting areas but the drought this year has left Lake Huron 9 inches lower than last year and 2 feet below its long-term average.  There is water in the reserve, but not enough water to flood the hunting areas so the ducks are mostly staying in the reserve.  The DNR warned about the low water conditions back in September.

Freighter got to hunt with his sister Sunny.  When you are hunting with puppies, you spend a lot of time watching the puppies and not as much time shooting.  Eventually a bunch of ducks came through and the hunters downed three of them.  The high corn made it difficult for the inexperienced pups to mark the falls.  They hunted around and eventually found the birds.  Good job pups!

  1. He IS going to be a great hunting dog, I can feel it. 🙂 Those hunters did a great job of hiding themselves, I’m not sure I actually could find them!

  2. I would love to see them in action!! Cool pictures, the dogs look so proud.

  3. Oh wow! I grew up in south Louisiana, where people pretty much hunt or fish year round, but I’ve never been hunting. Sure have eaten it, though! I don’t think my Jimmy and Petey would appreciate the photo, so I won’t show them. 😉

  4. Sounds like a fun weekend, minus the warm weather and wind:) I can’t find the Hunter and the Dog!

  5. Is this Fish Point, MI? How did you like your experience there? I am thinking of heading up there, but I am not a big fan of bingo hunts.

  6. I had a really hard time spotting you guys in that photo. Now if I was there, I could have just followed my nose! Looks like you all had fun – and brought home some yummy ducks! Nicely done!
