The title of this post is a bit deceiving because there wasn’t too much mischief.  Freighter was a bit excited which is not hard to understand since it was only his third show and an outdoor show at that.  It was a cool morning so he had energy to spare.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with how a dog show works, here is a brief rundown of Freighter’s time in the ring as told in pictures.  (It was a hard to get pictures because it was a bright sunny day and there were long shadows so I had to lighten some pictures.)

Freighter was entered in the “Bred By Exhibitor” class because his breeder/co-owner was showing him.  If my hubby was showing him, we would have been entered in a different class.  When it was time for the “Bred By” class, the ring steward called the dogs into the ring by their numbers and they lined up according to number.

The handlers stacked their dogs so the judge could get a look at them.

Freighter is in front being hand stacked.

Once the judge had a look at the dogs she asked the handlers to take them around the ring as a group so she could watch them move.

OH so Freighter was a little excited the first time around.
OK so Freighter was a little excited the first time around.

The the handlers re-stacked their dogs so the judge could look at each one.

Freighter is stacked and waiting as the judge approaches him. He also is getting a treat because he is being good.

The judge checked Freighter’s bite and examined his structure by actually touching him and feeling his structure.  She also checked his coat.  Then she asked his handler to take him “down and back”.  His handler moved him in a straight line away from the judge and straight back to the judge so she could observe his movement coming and going.

I was sitting to the side, so my pictures are not from the judge’s vantage point.

Then the judge asked his handler to take him around the ring so she could observe his movement from the side.

And that is where the mischief happened.

Once the judge examined all three dogs who were entered in the “Bred By” class, she had the handlers move the dogs around the ring once more.  Freighter was awarded second place in his class.

Good for him.  There were some nice dogs entered.  But Freighter wasn’t finished.

This part can get a bit complicated for people who are not familiar with how a dog show works.  Once the Judge picks the first place dog in each class, those dogs return to the ring and she picks Winners DogWinners Dog takes the points and advances to the Best of Breed competition.

After she has picked Winners Dog, she still needed to pick the Reserve Winners DogReserve Winners Dog is the runner-up to Winners Dog.  She selects from all the other dogs who finished first in their class, but since the first place dog in Freighter’s class was picked as Winners Dog, the second place dog returns to the ring and is eligible to be awarded Reserve Winners Dog.  The second place dog in the “Bred By Exhibitor” class was Freighter so he returned to the ring and the Judge gave him Reserve! It is a nice accomplishment to receive Reserve Winners Dog at a supported entry.

We had a formal picture taken but in the mean time here is Freighter with his loot from the day.  He got a fancy ribbon and a new bowl and a neat bag that says “Chessies Rule”.  How cool is that?

Thanks so much to Cindy for showing him!  She did a great job with an excited pup!

  1. Great job freighter. Congrats the pictures are fabulous. He scored on his winnings. Glory kept sniffing the ground too. She was being silly. Even know she got rw on sunday there were only 2 dogs. 🙁

    1. The ground smells good these days. lol We were kicking ourselves that we did not enter on Sunday. A second day on grass might have helped Freighter realize there is nothing for him there. 🙂 Congrats on your Reserve! Judges can withhold the ribbon so it isn’t an automatic. 🙂

      1. Oh that is nice to know that she wasn’t too awful not to get a ribbon. She had a burdock in her tail on Sat. The judge felt her over and goes she has a burr in her tail. I said “yea we were out hunting this am”. Don’t think he was too impressed! LOL Too bad you didn’t enter Sunday. He really looked good in his stride and stacking.

        1. LOL of course Glory is not too awful to get a ribbon. But I have heard the stories over the years where the judge has withheld ribbons (yep no first). And of course there was the whole stink where a finished champion was excused for color (that was Freighter grandmother). Anything can happen.

Well I am impressed that Glory was hunting in the morning and showing in the afternoon!

Freighter needs to mature a bit and I think his coat needs to come back in more. I was going to bathe him with your special shampoo yesterday to hurry it along and get rid of the dead hair, but we got sidetracked and then I ran out of time. Maybe I can find time this week.

  2. Hi Y’all!

Congratulations FREIGHTER!!! Way to go fella! Tough about the points…

From the angle of the photo, the winners dog looks like my pop Archie, who I look like too.

    Y’all come back now,
    Hawk aka BrownDog

    1. Winners Dog was very handsome. Storm’s breeder is showing him. He is out of the dog that made us want to get a Chessie. 🙂 Wish I had taken more pictures, but I was caught up watching…lol.

  3. That is awesome and you did a great job explaining it! Wow, such a great accomplishment for Freighter at a supported entry! He looks really good!
I miss showing and I’ll be looking forward to these posts!

  4. Way to go! Love the stance in the winner and reserve photo. Your dogs are all so handsome.

  5. Way to go Freighter. You showed really well. Nice cache of prizes as well. Love your pictures. You made everyone so proud and happy. Thanks for sharing. I waited to hear, I just knew he would win.

  6. Reserve from Bred-by at a supported entry? And Winners came from Bred-by, too? Doesn’t get much better than that. Congratulations! Looking good, Freighter!

  7. Congrats! He will finish in no time if he is doing that well at only 3 shows in. Great run down of the day, I even learned something lol. Shows are confusing even though I have done them for years now I still get mixed up. Luna does better at outdoors shows usually, happier as there are more things to watch and enjoy I ‘spose.

  8. Way to go Freighter! I’m impressed you managed to slip a little mischief in too!

I only ever did 3 Dog Shows (when I was young and before I could train to be a Therapy Dog), and each time I managed a little mischief! Then I got retired and I went full time into mischief! Tee Hee

    Glad you had fun,

    Your pal Snoopy 🙂

  9. I imagine it’s difficult outside with all those enticing smells. Good job Freighter and Cindy and you and Jim for all the work you’ve put in. He’s going to win so many more ribbons!!

  10. Nice haul, Freighter! Not bad for one weekend’s work. I dunno, if it was me judging, I think Freighter looks better than the Winner’s Dog 🙂

  11. Excellent job sweet, handsome Freighter. You got all that loot, made reserve and even got in a ground sniff now we think that accomplishment in itself deserved a special prize. Congrats!!! Hugs and nose kisses

  12. Sweet! For a dog with so little experience getting Reserve is great! The photo of Frieghter and the Winner brought up a question…They look very different in build to me…Freighter looks taller and sleeker while the winner is more compact…I know that for years there’s been a gulf between “field Labradors” and “show Labroador” with the field dogs being slimmer and leggier and the show dogs being shorter and bulkier (maybe not the best word)…my question is whether there’s a similar gap in Chessies…do you also divide the dogs between field and show?

  13. Well done, Freighter! I may be a little partial–ok, I’m totally partial–but I think you’re way more handsome than that other dog. 😉

  14. He is such a beautiful dog. I love to go to dog shows, but it is so confusing to those of us who have never entered.

  15. You did a superb job, Freighter! Congratulations! I would have messed all that fanciness up and gotten no award!

  16. That is great! Way to go Freighter! The pictures were super, and thanks for the great explanation on how it all works.

  17. Congratulations Freighter – what a great accomplishment. And I can sure see why you won – you are so handsome…and never mind that little sniff stop…big deal – you still WON Reserve! Well done.

  18. Well Freighter, I think you did a fantastic job even if you did decide to include a little mischief. There are smells to be sniffed and sometimes you just gotta sniff ’em.
Big congrats on your Reserve Winners Dog accomplishment and all your loot!
P.S. You’re more handsome than the Winners Dog.

  19. Congratulations Freighter! 🙂 I noticed that your breeder is co-owner. How does that work? Is this a common practice among professional breeders?

  20. Great job Freighter! And thanks for the dog show explanation, I always wondered what people meant when they spoke of BOW but never asked.
