Saturday and Sunday Freighter was entered in a dog show.  His manners at the show continue to improve.  On Saturday he worked well for hubby in the ring.  The Judge didn’t like him though, he ended up being second out of two in his class.

Here are a few pictures of Freighter in the ring on Saturday:

These rings seemed very small, so by the time Freighter got going, it was time to turn a corner.  I don’t know how the really big dogs move in those small rings.

There was a bit of a dust-up in the ring next to ours.  A Rottweiler went after another Rottweiler and that dog’s handler.  I suspect the handler was someone new to showing dogs.  Once they separated the dogs, the Judge had a long talk with the handler.  The Judge could have DQ’d the dog, but I checked the results and it looks like that is not what happened.  Some DQ’s will result in the dog not being allowed back in a show.  Hopefully the handler will have better control over that dog in the future.

After the show, it was off to training again.  I will have more on that later this week.

Then Sunday morning it was back to the show bright and early.  Of course by this time Freighter is getting tired and kind of fidgety.  But on the whole he worked well for his handler in the ring and moved very nicely.  He won the Open Class and took Reserve Winners Dog to a 4 point Major.  He sure has a lot of Reserves to his name.

It is a good thing that we are done with shows for a bit because he is really blowing coat.  I felt like he was leaving bits of it as he went around the ring.  🙂

When the Judge makes his/her pick, they usually point to the winner or tell the handler.  Then the dogs line up in the order of placement to receive ribbons.  The ring steward marks the winner on the official sheets.  Everything is recorded from the number on the handler’s arm so the handler needs to make sure the steward can see it.

  1. Congratulations, Freighter! It’s great to see how elegant you look in the ring. A free for all at a show is a nightmare, fortunately the two Rottweilers are well and both got their judgement.

  2. we prefer to think of it not as the judge didn’t like Freighter but that the judge had two excellent examples in front of him and had to make a tough call that just happened to not go Freighter’s way on that particular day 🙂 Go Freighter!

  3. Obviously the judge must have been having eye problems. Freighter should have took it all, but then again, I am just a little prejudice. Thanks for the pictures and the narrative.

  4. Way to go, Freighter, even though we know you’d rather be out huntin’! Those rottweilers were probably just argueing about how handsome you are! Glad there were no injuries!

  5. Asta went reserve winner’s bitch both days this weekend. Even worse that the bitch who keeps beating her finally finished on Saturday, and her owner didn’t move her up on Sunday… So she has lots of reserves and no points yet. Hopefully things will get better and we can start making progress toward a CH! Freighter looks really good!!

  6. I think he’s doing fabulous!! He will get that win, because he’s a great dog.

  7. Great job! My mom’s life has gone to the dogs she said, but she doesn’t mind, she likes it that way.

  8. Bummer about Saturday, but well done on Sunday!
In our limited show experience, we heard many times “obedience dogs don’t make good show dogs”, followed up by some nonsense about always wanting to sit and not having any “personality”. (From what I could tell, “personality” is a euphamism for excited/unruly behaviour?)
So, with this anti-obedience sentiment, coupled with a lot of intacts dogs, I’m actually suprised there aren’t more scuffles in the ring. I’ve never seen/heard one in person. But it sounds like everyone addressed it well.

  9. Sorry Freighter didn’t win this one, but he looked great! Your story of the rottie reminds me of a show I was at where a dobe and a swissy got into it, they both got off leash and racing around the show grounds, the swissy trying to get away from the dobe who was hot on his tail. He lost a piece of his ear. It was pretty scary, especially for those people who had small dogs. 🙁

  10. that looks like fun! I really like dog shows. I am sorry Freighter didn’t win but I bet he had fun Ive seen a scuffle at a dog show before between two bulldogs and it was kind of scary

  11. Marvelous Freighter! Last photo says, “I did a good job, huh?” He seems focused and willing to get this over with.
