Show Photos

We received Thunder and Freighter’s pictures from the St. Clair KC show.  I was very happy with this set of pictures and thought the photographer did a nice job.

Family Traits

All of a sudden I have been noticing things that Freighter is doing that Grandpa Thunder also does.  No, not getting on the counter to eat up cheese.  Actually Thunder was a terrible counter surfer when he was young and he was so big that he could get all the way to the back of the counter with his hind legs still on the floor.  Luckily Thunder gave that up at about 18 months old.  One day he stopped doing it and has not done it since.

Since he was young, Thunder has scratched himself while balancing on three legs and contorting himself into all kinds of positions .  I always wondered if it wouldn’t be easier just to sit and scratch, but he likes to balance on three legs.  All of a sudden Freighter is doing the same thing.  I don’t know if he saw Grandpa Thunder do it and figured it looked like a good idea, or if it something in the genes.

In addition to the balancing act, when Thunder was younger he always made a game out of grabbing a shoe and running around with it.  He was just playing and thought it was great fun.

I think I shared that when Thunder was recovering from bloat surgery, there was a time when I was not sure whether he would ever be the same because he had no sparkle in his eyes.  One day when he came in the house he got a mischievous look on his face and grabbed the shoe that I had just taken off.  I knew then he was going to be OK.  But at 8 Thunder doesn’t grab shoes as much as when he was younger.

All of a sudden Freighter has picked up the slack.  He grabs the first shoe he sees and runs around with it, his tail going a mile a minute.  Again, I wonder if this is a family trait.

Finally, a belated thanks to Caren over at Dakota’s Den. A few weeks ago Caren ran a give-away for the book “The Truth About Dogs And Cats And Treatments And Anomalies” by Robert Ridgway DMV and I won!  It is an easy to understand handbook describing common pet illness and treatments, including home remedies.  Thanks Caren for sending us this great resource.

  1. Those pictures are gorgeous!! One of the awesome things about having shorter dogs, lol, is that they can’t reach the counters! 😀

  2. Lovely photo portraits. Love to hear about their little mischiefs. They do have such personalities. LOL Freighter is emulating Thunder. Fun times ahead. Have a tremendous Thursday.
    Best wishes Molly

  3. Love those photos of Thunder and Freighter! Wonder what other little Thunder habits Freighter will display in the future?

  4. The photos are wonderful ! Maybe it runs in the family to balancing on three legs? I have some hope now that the counter surfing will stop here to once too :o)

  5. Beautiful show pictures. I too watch my dogs and see what each one does that the other family member does. Makes me wonder too if they are inherited or watched and learned behaviors. Congrats on winning the book.

  6. Hi Y’all,

If the looks run in the family, so it follows, in my humble opion, so would some of the “funny stuff”.

    Y’all come by now,
    Hawk aka BrownDog

  7. Wonderful pics!
There’s a certain Labrador in our house who has been known to stretch herself to the back of the counter in search of butter and tomatoes (she has eclectic tastes.)

  8. I love this story. I’ve only had a little experience with ‘families’ – our Lab Maxine had puppies. I don’t remember them doing the same behaviors, but I remember her son, who lived next door and weighed probably 25lbs more than her being completely subservient to her. She could just give him a look and he’d stop in his tracks.

  9. Freighter looks so proud in his victory picture! Thunder looks like, “Yeah, okay, another award – I’m an old hand at winning awards”. 🙂 I love the idea of behaviors being part of a family line. I wish I knew what Daisy’s parents were like, or how her two siblings behave. There are so many advantages to knowing a dog’s lineage.

  10. I love that you’re seeing family traits show up! Such sweet dogs. And really? All the way to the back of the counter?!? Impressive!

  11. Sometimes I’m hard pressed in trying to figure out if it’s genetics or environmental. I will say that Delilah has picked up some of Sampson’s habits (thankfully he hasn’t picked up too many of hers.) 🙂

My dogs usually pick up toys and run with them, I’m too afraid to let Delilah have a shoe. LOL

Thanks for the Caring for Critters shout out, I’ve already had someone tell me they used the page for something! So exciting because that’s what it’s all about.

  12. Those two guys are sure looking good! Whatever the reason, it’s great that Freighter is doing some things that Thunder does, it’s always fun to see them carry on habits of their relatives.
Oh, and I’m glad to hear there’s at least a chance Luke will outgrow his counter surfing!

  13. That’s soo funny!!
Ziva has done the same thing in the past. She is not a thief but one day we were visiting the hubby’s parents and we noticed Ziva zooming around the backyard with some thing black in her mouth. Tail high and waving like a flag, she was super proud of herself.
I of course went outside to investigate, and she had stolen my father in-laws slipper!! Hahahahahahaha!!! Didn’t hurt it at all, just thought she would spice up the night. 🙂

  14. That is so neat he has traits like his grandpa! I wonder if we have traits like our parents? I bet we do have some. Nice photos, too!

  15. Those are great show pictures! I’ve seen some which were disappointing, to put it kindly, so I’m glad you got a good batch.

Elka does the “tripod” scratching thing as well, and seems to miss her face about half the time! Sometimes there’s no understanding a dog’s reasons.
