It isn’t the official end of the waterfowl season.  That doesn’t come for a few weeks.  However, this past weekend was the last for our dogs this year.

Storm headed up to Fish Point for the weekend.  The weather was good for hunting.

Friday afternoon the hunters were hunting the managed area and got a good draw so they had a good spot.

There was only one problem.

No Ducks

There weren’t many ducks flying and the hunters did not hear much shooting.

Storm was a good girl and waited and waited.

But they never really had a chance at any birds.

They tried again Saturday morning and Freighter’s sis Sunny got to go.  This time they got first pick of spots in the managed area.  Prime spot!

It was cold, windy and rain mixed with snow.  Perfect weather.

Again no ducks.

The DNR claims there are 20,000 ducks in the refuge.  The hunters sure never saw them.  There is a big storm moving across the northern US and Canada.  If there are ducks in the refuge, that should get them moving on.

On the whole, the numbers at Fish Point seemed down this season.  It didn’t seem like the ducks stopped long in Michigan this Fall and choose to push further south.  It was a strange season.

Our dogs had a pitiful season.  Oh well.  That’s hunting.

Now hubby turns his attention to deer hunting.  Unfortunately it does not involve using the dogs so the brown dawgs get a bit of a break.  We do have another pheasant hunt booked in December so they will get some work.

  1. Have not heard the early morning shots along the Maumee, almost none. Yet our friend’s bass pond has a half dozen resident mallards. Is this just another sign of climate change?

  2. Do the dogs get bummed out when they wait and wait and there are no ducks, or are they just happy to be out there no matter what? Looks like it was a lovely weekend at least!

  3. The photos from that first day of hunting are absolutely beautiful, but I’m sorry the action was so slow. Maybe the ducks have been tuning into The Weather Channel and they decided to make an early exit and miss the big arctic blast. 😉

  4. She is such a good girl to sit there so patiently, how disappointing for her and your Hubs.

  5. Ugh, that has to be so frustrating! I never could understand how my hubby could spend so much time deer hunting and not get anything. Then I used to go fishing with him, and if nothing was biting, I’d be so frustrated! I guess I just don’t have the patience for it. I hope your hubby at least has some success with his deer hunting.

  6. Sorry the Brown Dawgs saw no ducks at the end of the season. Hope they enjoy their break. One thing came of the last day though…fantastic pictures! Hugs and nose kisses
