When a baseball player is injured, he is placed on the disabled list  I am not a baseball player, but I spent a good part of the summer on the disabled list after unplanned major abdominal surgery.  At 10 weeks post surgery I am feeling great and ready to come off the disabled list.

Unfortunately right around the time I got out of the hospital, hubby went on the disabled list himself.  He was dealing with a compressed disc in his neck which was very painful.  It put a damper on the end of the hunt test season and he cut way back on Freighter’s training because he was getting physical therapy several times a week.  We were even wondering if he would have to miss hunting season this year.  Luckily the PT helped and he is feeling much better and is also off the disabled list.

The timing couldn’t be better because Fall has arrived and so has hunting season.  Grouse and woodcock are open and waterfowl will open Saturday.  Up at our cabin waterfowl hunting means hunting wood ducks on the river.

It also means that we will be spending long weekends up at the cabin all through October.

Normally we take a chunk of vacation to correspond with the waterfowl opener.  But the last couple of years that has not really worked out because we missed the bulk of the migration.  You see ducks are migratory birds, and the weather determines when they migrate. Things like cold fronts and bad weather way up north push them south.  However, once the leaves fall of the trees the wood ducks don’t stop and just keep heading south, (which is what happened last year).

The same is true for woodcock.  Last year we totally missed the migration because they came though after our vacation time.  (Woodcock season this year is September 19-November 2.)  We have also found that October is the best month for grouse hunting up there.  September is too warm and by November, they are difficult to come by.

Hubby also wants to do some bow hunting (for deer) and that season is open October 1 to November 14, (when the firearm season opens).  Again success can be dependent on weather causing the deer to move.

We would love to take the entire month of October off to spend at the cabin but that is not going to happen.  🙂  Instead this year we are trying the new strategy of taking long weekends.

The only problem with spending long weekends at the cabin is the lack of decent internet service there.  I may get behind with my blog reading including stopping by to say “hi” to all of the Thursday Barks and Bytes hoppers.  I hope you will bear with me.  I will of course be sharing the brown dawgs’ hunting adventures all through October, but I will be reducing my blogging schedule to take Fridays off.

  1. I hope you enjoy those nice long weekends. It’s so funny that I worry about the lack of internet service as well up north, but that worry leaves once I’m actually there and enjoying myself. Although last year I did miss a little bit of simple entertainment, so I went and rented a movie. Which I don’t think I’d done in years.. Glad to know you seem to be doing better after surgery, recovery is never fun.

  2. We are really sorry to hear that you both had such a bad spring and summer. we are praying that you are both healthy and get to enjoy long weekends hunting. Hopefully the “Brown Dawgs” get the chance to retrieve a lot of birds and have a great time. Glad you are back feeling much better.

  3. What an awful period you and hubby went through, but I’m so glad you’re both doing better. Sounds like a great plan for October – have fun, you both deserve it!

  6. Oh my goodness, if we had a cabin and could go spend long weekends there for an entire month or so, we would do it too! You all have a great time at the cabin – hunting and enjoying nature.

  7. Taking the month of October off to spend at a cabin sounds like heaven… 🙂 Isn’t it a shame we humans have to work to provide for our furbabies? 🙂
