We had a warmer than normal Winter, but Spring is making up for that.  Our weather has been chilly.  Chilly and rainy.  The dogs have been limited to short swims due to the cold ponds.  This has our hunt test training a little behind from where we would like it to be.  It is a bit frustrating because hunt tests start in just 3 short weeks.

Of course Freighter doesn’t care about cold ponds.  He is a typical Chesapeake Bay Retriever and likes the water and retrieving.  He would swim all day long if we let him.

Freighter Says Cold Water Don’t Bother Me

How was your weekend?

  1. That is a great photo of Freighter. Cold ponds do not sound fun but as long as the Chessies like it, then have at it! I hope you get some more training in before the hunt tests.

  2. thanks for the bumper Thunder :o) I rather watch that cold water from a distance, it makes me shiver that the public pools here opened their doors yesterday LOL… but hey maybe you would like to take a bath there?

  3. Our weekend was cold and wet, too! We got out for walks every day, but I think I canceled out any benefits of it by coming in and drinking hot chocolate to warm back up. Hope that you get better training weather soon!

  4. Rainy here so the Chessies paid a visit to Bass Pro for a bit it of socialization on Friday. Saturday they walked through the dog food, toys, and treats, aisle after aisle at Andersons. In the afternoon they supervised the mowing, until it rained, again.
Hopefully, they will be able to swim at the bass tomorrow. Macha is entered as a Veteran, in three short weeks. Quite possibly, she will be going against Storm’s (her half-sister) girl, big winner of the weekend!
Congratulations, it is all in the family!
Cold water stimulates Macha’s coat, which just now is feeling showable. Plenty of towels will dry the old girl off and fluff her up!

  5. My weekend was AMAZING. I still need to post pictures of our ponds. A few weekends ago, three of the dogs decided to check out the water in one of them. It’s 8′ deep with no edge. Thankfully, I’ve been working on their recall so they pulled back. We need plants around the edge to make sure it’s solid.

  6. We’ve had rain, rain, and more rain. The street briefly became a pond the other day. Freighter could have worked on his training right in front of our house! But the sun should come out in a couple of days and the weather humans have promised us glorious days through the weekend. Hope you have prettier days ahead, too!

  7. I think Delilah would do the same. She loves the water. I hope you get some warmer weather, I suspect the cold water will not matter in a hunt test.

  8. You would think with the warm winter we had, that spring could be warmer too! We had a beautiful day on Saturday, and then Sunday and since then rainy and cool. We’re hoping for an improvement by the end of the week. We really needed the rain though so I hate to complain…I hope things will really start to green up now.
Sheba would be thrilled with even a short swim, but it still seems too early to me (since for us it would just be recreational).

  9. Hi Y’all!

Somehow Mother Nature seems to even things out to within a few degrees every year. Seems she always makes us pay for any break in the weather she offers.

    Y’all come on by,
    Hawk aka BrownDog

  10. With spring runoff, the rivers are too dangerous, and even though the temperatures are warming up, the water is still cold so I’m not doing much water work now.
