It’s Follow-up Friday.  The blog hop that:

Let’s you wrap up your week and leads you right into the weekend.

Thank you to Jodi from Heart Like A Dog for asking me to co-host this week.  I always enjoy hosting this hop!

I am going back a bit to catch up on a question from the week before last.

Opening Day

ILoveDogs asked:  Fall is the season for most of the kinds of hunting you do, right?

Mostly, but depending on how much snow there is, we can hunt pheasant on private grounds Winter into Spring.  Duck season usually runs from October to the end of November.  Grouse will close for the season January 1.

Follow-up Friday 10-11-13

This post was about my new waterproof camera.

Ruckus the Eskie commented: Freighter looks pretty good with no flash! Seems so focus though. Wonder what’s over there?

My guess is that he was hoping some ducks would appear.  🙂  Here is that picture again.

Freighter using the iauto setting. No flash. It was low light. Evening on a cloudy day.

Anna commented:  Oh fun! and very handy. I still need to sell my pentax waterproof. DId yours come with a manual book? That’s one thing I didn’t like when I got my Olympus waterproof. No book, Just a CD :( I am one of the few that reads those manuals to learn where things are at. Looks like I will have to print it off instead. Have fun playing, I am waiting for my brother to visit so he can return my charger to me. (another weird thing about the camera, no battery charger just a cable)

Yep it is the same with this one, no manual, just a CD and you have to charge the battery in the camera unless you buy a separate charger.

Gizmo commented:  I’ve had two Olympus cameras and the one thing that bothered me was that it had a proprietary cable and not a standard USB…i hate having to keep an inventory of “special” cable for each device…same with their memory cards…couldn’t just use a standard, it had to be a special “Olympus” card …I have one or two of them around here if you want some extra memory…Let me know and I’ll mail them to you

The cord is still the same, different from my other cords, but this camera just takes a standard memory card.  In fact it can use:  SD/SDHC/SDXC/Eye-Fi/FlashAir.  I mostly use SDHC cards which I also use in my DSLR camera.  Thanks for the kind offer but it looks like it that is one thing they changed.

Monday Mischief–Vacation Mischief

There is a story about the bear.

Poor Bear
Poor Bear

We have had that bear for years.  Probably at least 10.  We used to belong to a membership campground.  One day they invited a chainsaw wood-carver to come and give a demonstration.  We watched him carve that bear.  He was selling the things he carved that day and the price was right so we bought the bear and kept it in the trailer.  It traveled all over with us.  The carver came back the next year, but he was charging a lot more for his carvings so we didn’t buy another.

When we sold the trailer we took the bear up to the cabin and put it on the porch where it sat unnoticed.  Until last weekend.

Luckily, hubby was able to sort of fix Mr. Bear’s nose.  Sorry I didn’t get a picture.  🙂

Grouse And Woodcock Hunting

Emmadog asked:  Do you eat the birds you catch? It’s not like fishing where you can toss them back!

No you can’t throw them back.  🙂  Yes we eat them.  In fact we ate these birds the next day for lunch.  The grouse was wonderful and we shared the woodcock with the brown dawgs.

Sometimes the dogs flush rabbits, but hubby usually passes on those because I am not cooking or eating rabbit.  (I know Emma…unheard of. :))

Happy Freighter
Happy Freighter

jodi asked:  I love that ‘skunked’ picture of Freighter. Do you suppose they are disappointed, or they are just doing their jobs?

and Marcie asked:  Do the dogs show any disappointment if the day has been a slow action one, or do they just enjoy being out and doing what they do?

They enjoy just being out and working.  Freighter has less experience so for him it is still a walk in the woods.  However, if the hunter misses a shot then the dogs have been known to give a stink eye or two.

Thank you!  I am glad someone noticed.  😆

Wordless Wednesday–Autumn Walk

Ann “Paws” Staub asked:  Lovely photo today! Can birds not see bright orange? Just wondering why hunters wear such a bright color when they are trying to be sneaky and stuff.

Waterfowl hunting, you need to be concealed so the hunter wears camo.  But for upland hunting (pheasant, grouse, woodcock), you don’t have to be sneaky.   The idea is to flush the birds out of the brush.  Since you are moving through heavy brush at times and the birds usually flush from the brush, we wear orange for safety so we are visible to one another.

Hubby And Freighter Heading Out. You Might Be Able To See The Back Of A Dog Trailer That Was Parked There. We Knew There Was Another Hunter Nearby So We Kept An Eye Out. Turns Out He Was Duck Hunting On The Lake.

This ‘N That Thursday

Marcie asked:  I really need to learn how to use my camera so I can take some neat pictures. How did you learn…just playing around with the camera, online tutorials, an actual class?

I haven’t taken any classes because I have not been able to find any around here.  I have read a couple of books and there was a nice CD that came with my camera that illustrated some techniques.  Mostly, I just mess around.  🙂

The weekend Thunder is spending it waterfowl hunting at Fish Point.  That means I should have some time to catch up.  If I haven’t been around to visit, I plan to this weekend.

  1. great fuf. I just had a conversation with my friend about if the dogs are disappointed if they don’t get a bird. I say this because Nellie and I went out hunting the other day and I let her run amuck and she ran up to the water before me so the wood ducks got up way ahead of me. John asked why I didn’t have my dog under control. I just gave him a bland stare. Which leads me to…..for me being out hunting and having the dog with me doesn’t matter if I get anything or not. It is time spent with my friend. If I get something then it is a bonus but really I think Nellie was in her glory to just have my time alone with her. I’m sure she would of liked to get a bird but I didn’t get any stink eye that day.

    1. I think it is true. They just like to be out with their person.

Funny what happened Nellie, because while they were hunting last week, Thunder got up to move a bit and scared some wood ducks. Hubby said Thunder felt really bad about it and the next day he sat still like a statue. lol He really likes to get birds. Basically a meat hunter. 🙂

  2. Another good follow up. MOM like to eat “wild” stuffs too. Last week at the homeless shelter someone brought in bear. Not kidding. Some of the staff was all, “I’m not touching that!” (The person who brought it in had it processed). My MOM was all like, “Yea I can cook it.” And she did. Pweople did not know what they were eating, but they sure did like it.
    Blessings,
    Goose

    1. Hubby got a bear before. It is excellent lean meat. I cooked every bit of it. I even served it at family gatherings and they had no idea. 🙂 Good for you for giving it a try!

  3. Oh that shot of the chipmunk is making me go wild…I love watching them! I guess I never wrote it, but Mom said she could not go with you all hunting because she wouldn’t walk through all that brush, you never know what might be in there…she is so silly! She also wishes cameras still came with printed manuals but that seems to be extinct these days. Your photos are great.

  4. Glad to hear that Mr.Bear’s nose has since been fixed. Sounds like such a cool demonstration, I’ve never seen anything like chainsaw carving before.

Happy to join the blog hop today! -Jess @ Life with Duke

  5. Hi all! Sorry I’ve been gone for so long…I am so glad I am back in time to catch your follow up! I never realized that some hunting seasons were longer than others. I bet eating what you hunt/catch is delicious…I dream of catching and eating a rabbit (but shhhhh, don’t tell my Ma; she would be quite upset to hear that). I hope you have a great weekend!

  6. Awesome follow-up! Thank you so much for co-hosting the hop! I’ve been playing with the camera and found some fun features. One of these days I’ll get around to writing about it. 🙂

I love that last photo of Thunder, it’s calendar worthy. 😉

    Have a great weekend!

  7. So y’all just hunt birds? I’m sure Emma is howling about passing on the wabbits.

  8. That chipmunk has fat cheeks! Hahahahaha! Love reading the questions and answers about hunting. I never thought about them but when I read them, I was like oh yah, good questions 🙂

  9. I love Thunder’s camo hunting vest…You really are getting great photos..You do get into some tough cover there…Glad for you they ditched that xD memory…Poor Mr. Bear…wonder what occasioned that particular mischief after all this time…

  10. Mmm. Talking about eating what you caught makes me hungry… My nephew and bro used to hunt doves and my bro would make bacon-wrapped dove breasts. Yum. Great FUF post!

  11. Great follow up! I loved your comment about the dogs giving the stink eye when a hunter misses a shot. I can just picture what the dog is thinking….”I did all that work, and you screwed it up!” LOL
I love those chainsaw carvings. We had a big squirrel for years but it eventually just fell apart. I recently found an eagle at a yard sale for a steal!

  12. Hi Y’all!

My Humans only hunted birds but some friends also hunted squirrel and rabbit. My Human said that was some of the “best eatin'” she ever had. My Human also loves well prepared frog’s legs. My Humans also love deer meat. Do y’all ever go deer huntin’? Here in our state they run them with dogs. In Canada they will kill a dog they catch runnin’ deer. In most states the Humans have lived they do not allow spotlighting or running deer with dogs.

    Y’all come back now,
    Hawk aka BrownDog

  13. Thanks for the Follow up and the lovely pictures. I think your dogs would make super models. They should all be in pictures.

  14. Wonderful post and thank you so much for it. I have had a busy week and not much time to visit and comment. It is always nice to come read your ‘Follow up Friday’ posts. 15. Nice pictures! Your cabin is in the middle of some beautiful country.
